Chesterfield Railway Station, 2001
Whilst at careyjones architects Simon and Jonathan worked alongside Clugston Construction to win a Railtrack competition for the provision of new station facilities at Chesterfield. The project required the demolition of the existing station building which was undertaken in two separate phases to allow the station to remain operational. General DDA and access improvements were also undertaken as part of this contract including a pair of lifts to the underpass.
The design features a simple flowing roof form describing the station concourse off which all station facilities can be accessed together with retail units and a cafe. The simplicity of design provides a striking building, that is bright, welcoming and easy to use for travellers.
The design of the building coincided with the release of new Railtrack DDA guidance and as such many of these features and concepts were implemented on this contract. The successful outcome of the project is evidenced by Railtrack using this project as a model for subsequent rebuild and refurbishment contracts.
