21 Queen Street, Leeds

think architecture+design have secured planning consent for the transformation of this 1980s office building at the heart of Leeds' business quarter. The proposals include an innovative design approach to gaining a further two floors to the building, whilst respecting the strong architectural language of the existing. The new fifth floor will form a dramatic visual stop when looking along Park Place, its lozenge form floating over the red brick arches of the existing building with the new glazed vertical entrance core connecting it to street level.

Simon Smithson of think architecture+design said "This is a fantastic step forward for our new practice and we are delighted to be involved in this exciting project and demonstrates our commitment to finding the right solutions for our clients. Working with Ripley Capital with a brief to revitalise the building in these tough economic times has been an excellent challenge, and we look forward to taking the scheme forward to a completion early next year".

The sustainability target for this re-used building is a Breeam 'Excellent'. This will be achieved by the inclusion of new high performance curtain walling, low energy mechanical and electrical systems and photovoltaic panels. In addition secure cycle storage and electric car charging points are proposed.
